Trahan Architects: Professional Work Sample
Studio 601    -    Fall 2021

Trahan Architects, founded in New Orleans, is a design firm with an emphasis on using materials to evoke senses of rootedness. Drawing inspiration from ecologies and landscapes, much of the work designed by Trahan is deeply embedded in its environment and cultural context.

After studying in Trey Trahan’s studio at The Catholic University of America, I was recruited to work in Trahan’s NYC Office. Over the course of 8 months, I worked closely with the Principal and Design Directors to carry out design work and presentation materials for a variety of projects, primarily in Schematic Design.

Funeral Complex - New Orleans, LA

Impact

The project site is situated at one of the lowest points in New Orleans, making it highly prone to seasonal flooding. The site gently slopes to a lifted center, placing the lowest building levels and outdoor program space to be above the base flood elevation.
The four primary pavilions anchor the four corners of the site. An cypress lined allee is placed centrally to provide space for funeral processions, which are common within the community.
Funerary practices in New Orleans encompass rich traditions that navigate the spectrum of human emotions, from celebration to grief. The funeral home is often where many of these cultural practices take place, hosting different individual, family, and community-oriented activities
