9th Street Pathway and Coffee Shop

The Shaw neighborhood of Washington DC contains something that many American cities have lost over the years: a vibrant alleyway system containing shops and storefronts. Reminiscent of European cities, this feature is a hidden gem of sorts. Only the locals in the area frequent these spaces, as many Americans have associated alleyways with danger and crime. My proposal for our 9th street site is a pathway to connect the main street with the alleyway system.
The screen on the 9th street facade is dynamic, symbolically tying together the alley system to the rest of the neighborhood. To the right of the above image, the screen transforms into planter boxes, as well as rises up to become a bench. Within the pathway, there are a series of community garden spaces as well as a coffee shop on the alleyway side.
