Stead Park Recreation Center: Under the Canopy
Studio 301    -    Fall 2018

Located in an urban valley, surrounded by the tallest buildings in Washington DC, including the famous Cairo Tower (DC’s tallest residential structure), sits Stead Park. The site in question is an existing field with a small, delapidated recreation center. Our studio was tasked with redesigning the structure as a modern response to the urban fabric of DC.

My proposed intervention focused on amplifying the exisiting urban conditions of this “valley.” Many of the surrounding buildings look down onto the park, and therefore onto the roof of the rec center. In response to this condition, I propose a sculputural roof, acting as a canopy of sorts for the roof deck while providing an interesting visual element for those working and living in the nearby mid to highrise structures. Additionally, the canopy acts as sunshade, allowing light to heat the concrete floorslab during the cool winter months, while blocking the light in the summertime.

Water Catchment System:

- Rain water collected by outdoor bench canopy
- Water piped through sand and oil filter
- Water piped into building to service toilets and radiant cooling system
Sun Shading for Passive Cooling and Heating:

- During summer, direct sunlight is blocked from entering the space
- During winter, direct sunlight is allowed in to heat concrete thermal mass on the floor
