Studio 401 - Fall 2020
Pantelleria is a small, quiet island located in the Mediterranean Sea between the coasts of Africa and Italy. As an Italian territory, it is rich in culture and history. The island was heavily bombed during WWII, and as a result, much of the our costal site sits in ruin. Pantelleria is famous for a wine making technique involving Zebbibo Grapes. The technique itself is recognized globally by UNESCO as a world heritage. Additonally, the island is home to many artisans and craftsmen who trade their goods to local tourists. In response to the rich history and culture of the site, I propose an Arts and Cultural Center to showcase artifacts, wine making techniques, and celebrate local artisans.
Architectually, the center is mostly subterranean. Towers errupting from the basement level, framing a public park and plaza. The towers are glass cores, wrapped with a perforated corten steel screen. The program is primarily open exhibition space, however the project also includes an amphitheater, community center, meditation space, and a pier
